i want to go out and buy some moonlighting dvds, just so I can have my daily dose of URST. is that bad?
(also i'm listening to catpower on favtape and need to buy an album or two, too)
I almost got tickets to see them all on Saturday night. Visa were having a 2 for 1 sale, which made the tickets only $70 each, and my friend E said she was free and could come, but when I went to buy the tickets the 2 for 1 sale had gone :( and I don't think I can shell out $140 and ask my friend E to do the same. Sucks though, because I love them all...

NZ Hip Hop artist who first came to my attention when he released "Stand Up" off his "The Crusader" album. The way he rolls his "r's" is awesome, and come to think of it he could be the reason I put "hella" in front of words. I recently bought his next album "Rhyme Book" in which I think he sounds like Jay Z. That could just be me though, and my limited hip hop knowledge. There is this awesome song on it called "My Shit" which you have to play hella loud in your car.
I honestly am a fairly new fan of Nas. I has heard some of his stuff, but didn't really pay attention to him until I saw this on rage one day:
and of course
K West
So my main reason for not going to see Kanye is that I've already seen him three times before. Twice he rocked, the other he was opening for U2, and no one cared and it was a little sad. YES, I've heard that the glow in the dark tour is amazing, and YES i know he has two great supports as just mentioned, but i'm tryna talk myself out of it OK?
Which brings me to something I've been meaning to blog about for a while:
Now, I have mixed feelings about this album. At first I was a hater. Cos, its really just a break up album with that voice synth thing that makes him sound like Cher. Yet I curiously find myself listening to it over and over again. why?
Now I know Kanye has talked about the fact its not a hip hop album, but a new genre, his "pop art". But that still doesn't explain it.
Every time I tell someone I like Kanye, they go "He is so up himself". To which I reply, "What hip hop artist isn't". But this is the thing that is so unhinging and strange about this album. He is insecure. He is scared, self doubting and questions himself, which can be heard in "Welcome to Heartbreak":
Which is why I think sales are so low. Pop stars are supposed to have the good life, like he raps about on graduation. My friend showed me pictures of his kids,
And all I could show him were pictures of my cribs.
He said his daughter got a brand-new report card,
And all I got was a brand-new sportscar.
Everyone works hard through their lives to realise their dreams. But Kanye, in one quick swoop has told us that dreams aren't worth it.
Now what confuses me is that Kanye knows he is a pop star. He buys into pop culture, and blatantly says that he is an icon for this generation. So shouldn't he realise that his personal feeling that he channels so well in this album unhinge the very thing that makes him a celebrity. We are supposed to be envious of them. Look up to them. He practically says he would be better off being one of us, and I think thats what weirds me out the most in this album.
Musically, it all sounds very similiar. There are parts of it that I find interesting, the beginning of Robocop makes me think of a Bjork song, but mostly I think of some eighties synth album, which leaves me uninspired and feeling quite numb. I think its a good side project, but I'm guessing that he will either never release an album again, or go back to the hip hop that made him great. (I say never make an album again mostly because of the final track "Pinochio Story".
So anyway, this is me convincing myself not to go. Not doing a very good job, am I?
This morning, while reading my vox neighbourhood and polishing off almost an entire fucking block of Cadbury Snack (chocolate, its awesome) I thought i'd give my genius a go on itunes. I had actually been researching it only the night before, interested in how it actually works. I have been having issues with it, because all of my old school jazz and big bands isn't getting recognised whatsoever, and can't give me a playlist.
Anyway, this morning I saw "about her" from the Kill Bill soundtrack, and I wanted to see what genius would do with it. First off it couldn't find anything, and told me to update genius. Once I did that, (which took a while as I have 37GB of music on my computer - about half my collection by the way...) this is what it gave me:
Playing it, the first couple of songs aren't actually that bad. they are all the same type of slow, laid back, kinda depressing mellow songs, except now, cos i've just hit 'some kinda shuffle' which would go very nicely with my big band stuff if genius was actually smart enough to recognise that.
I can't be too negative about genius though, I got props on Friday at work when it was picking obscure Santana songs and other brilliant music. I did have to guide it a bit though, turn off music, rearrange the playlists, etc. But it would be nice to create a genius playist and it not automatically play the new song.. like, if you could have multiple playlists, and really explore everything genius recommends.
One thing i hate though: where is my update for my ipod? not my iphone, but my trusty 80GB ipod which holds all my music? Surely that thing should get genius, because it would have such a great selection of music!
Let us hear the weirdest song from your music library.

One girl at work tells me I have weird music all the time. And its not even when i'm playing such weird stuff. Its Thom Yorke, or Gnarls Barkley, Regina Spektor or Roisin Murphy. Don't tell me I have weird music, tell me I have music by people with weird names.
Weird.. I guess thats very hard to define. I mean its WEIRD that I have the veronicas or teddy geiger on my ipod.
Its WEIRD that I like to listen old music from the war and before, and my grandfather and I bond over what i'm playing.
As for weird songs, I guess these are kinda weird, and they have a play count of at least +10 on my ipod.
Koyal (Songbird) by Nitin Sawhney
Baby Carni Bird by Camille
Pumpkin Soup by Kate Nash
Rock Bottom Riser by Smog
L'incendie by Vanessa Paradis
why does my iphone randomly play my music list? whats with that? what am i hitting?
tomorrow night some work friends and i are going out, and we are going to end up at karaoke at about 11.
I'm trying to think of the best songs to choose, but its difficult.
I know that one guy is going to choose Elton John, so there will definitely be some tiny dancer and b-b-b-b-benny and the jets. Plus i'm sure there will be some Oasis and Bon Jovi action. Come to think of it, i'm sure Love Shack and Love Rollercoaster will be on the list too. But I'm stuck trying to think of something for me to do. So far i have:
- Kitty by the Presidents of the USA
- Your body is a wonderland by John Mayer
- Buttons by the Pussy Cat Dolls
- Sexual Healing by Marvin Gaye/Ben Harper
But what else? Does anyone have any karaoke songs that kick ass?
We were playing the big chill soundtrack in my pod today at work, and a close friend came in and asked who was playing. It was Marvin Gaye "Whats Goin On". He is 22, but i still expected him to know what Motown is, and have at least recognised the song. Previously I'd also had a conversation with him about Bob Dylan, cos he didn't know who he was either...
Anyway, I wanted to make him an introductory disc to Motown... what do you think the best songs to put on are?
Update 20/06
I made these lists at work the other day, the were made in haste at work.
